Late Buddhindra Nath Dilihial Bhattachary ya The author of the Dictionary was born at Singia Potani Village, Nowgong, October, 1865, his father being Dharmadatta of an orthodox Brahmin family-- agentleman with a good reputation in the district. Rai Bahadur Gunabhiram got him admitted into the Nowgong Government High School and having passed the Entrance Examination in 1885, he entered a Calcutta College where Rai Bahadur Radhakanta Handique and Satyanath Bora were among his nota- ble companions. He had a brilliant career in the College ; but owin to indigent circumstances, he was compelled to leave it after completing the F.A, course of the Calcutta University and became a school muster at Jorhat Goverment High School. Luckily, he got an appointment in the Jorhat Court as Criminal Peskar from which he was in due course, promoted to be the Head Clerk of the Deputy Commissioner's Office. After retirement from Government service, he opened a tea estate at Barpathar, which is now a flourishing concern He had been to England in 1902 as Private Secretary to Rai Bahadur Jagannath Barovah who was invited to attend the Coronation Coremony of Edward the Seventh. In 1924, he was appointed to work as a Valuer of Golaghat Municipality and on March 5, 1945, he died leaving behind him a big family to mourn. The Chief of Buddhindra Bhattacharyya's writings are his various essays and arricles in the Assam Hitaishi, Books on Problems of the Hindu Society ; Ramani Gabharu and Chitrangada Milan-wo dramas, Chengeli Gaonburha in instructive farce on the co-operative business, Hindu Dharmar Vaignanik Tatta-a scientific analysis of the Hindu religion ; Bilat Jatra--a voyage to England and specially the book at hand-his life blood - the best-Anglo- Assamese vocabulary.
