O অসমীয়া ব্যাকৰণ আৰু ভাষার local Apabhransa. We have also noticed that the second stage of develop- ment of Secondary Prakrt is the Prakrt pa excellence, Two principal varieties of this Prart, viz., Maharastra- Sauraseni and Magadhi have bcen distinguished. This division applies also to the Apabhramsas. The Assamese language shows peculiarities of both. The following pecularities may be mentioned. (a) Sauraseni olement (i) Sanskrit termination rya” becomes “yya” and “ja" (H. c. IV. 266) in Sauraseni. This is also the case in Assamese Writing. But in pronunciation this is always "ja" (=ja) in Assamese Example :—S.-Aryah (venerable, respected, master). Sr. Pr:-Ajjo, and Ayyo. A.-Ajo (venerable, great grand-father), S.Karyam, Sr. Pr.Kajjo. A.Kaj (work). H, and Mar.aja ( = grand-father). In Magadhi on the other hand j" becomes y" (H, C. IV. 292 : Vr. XJ. 7). This is never the case in Assamese, especially in pronunciation. | Example :-s.-Karyan, Mg.-Kayye, A.Kaj (work). | S. diarjanah (wicked man), Mg.--diyyane, A.--durjana, (ii) “s" and “s" become “s" in Sauraseni (H. c. 1. 260). This is also the case in Assamese (s 33). On the other hand Sanskrit s” and “” bcccme “s" in Magadhi (H. c. IV. 289) which is never the case in Assamese (s 33). | (iii)) Sanskrit "ks" becomes “kh" (and rarely ch") in Sauraseni (H. c. II, 3) which is exactly the case in Assamese. In Irani also “ks" becomes “khs" (Vendidad V. 3). Example :--S.--maksi (a fly), Zend. makhs, S. Pr..makkhi, old Ass. rakkhi, A.--makhi. | S. k.sinam (lean). Sr.khinom, A. khina. In magadhi “ks” becomes “sk" (= ch: Vr. XI. ৪ : H. c. IV. 297) which is hardly the case in Assamese. (iv) Sanskrit past participle passive “kta” becomes in Sauraseni “a” (Vr. VII. 32), This becomes in Assamese (ia =) “” and is used in an active sense. । See Sacred Books of the East : Vol. IV.. p. 264.
