We may begin with philosophy as the first branch of this division. Works on this subject are rare, We may, however, mention the Gitis of Rama Saraswati and Govinda Misra and Anadj Fatan of Sri sankar Deva as works of philosophy besides some portions of a few other works These are poetical works, The Gita of Bhatta Deva is, however, in prose... (i) Astronomy and Astrology we next turn to Astronomy and Astrology as the second branch of the scientific Assamese literature. It may be observed that science of Astronomy was cultivated in Assam from a very early period. The name of the town of Gauhati itself, which was “Prägjyotisapura” in old times, indicates that this was so. The Nava-graha temple at Gauhati was ul- doubtedly an astronomical observatory. The following works are extant - Karmaphal (astrology-by Ratnakhari. Bhasvati (astronomy -by Kaviraja Saraswati, Svapnadhyaya (astrology)-by some unknown writer. (ii) Mathematic: Closely allied to the above is the next branch of the scientific literature.---mathematics.
