88 SOME ASSAMESE PROVERBS. 195. | Daughters. কথাত কথা বাঢ়ে, খৰিকাত বা ৮ কান, মাকৰ ঘৰত জীয়ৰি বাড়ে, পথাৰত বাঢ়ে ধান। Kathat katha bare, kharikat bare kan, Makar gharat jiwari bare, patharat bare dhan. A story grows by telling, a bit of straw makes the hole in the ear larger; A girl grows up best at her mother's house, paddy grous best on the pathar. খৰিকা means a grass tooth-pick, a roasting spit, or a spire of dry grass to which the eggs of “ mag” silkworms are attached. Here it is used in its first sense, the tooth-pick being used to make the hole, bored through the lobe of the ear, bigger. Both men and women wear earrings, called thani (গুৰিয়া), which are nearly always cylindrically-shaped bits of amber, with a gold knob at the end, which shows in front. As these “ thaurad ” are often of considerable diameter, a large hole is required in the ear. The best way to widen the hole is to put in an additional bit of straw (খৰিকা) each time this is possible. The proverb is an answer to the question -Where do things thrive best 196. Daughters and the value of land abed the house. টি বলধা ওলাই মটি, মাক ভালে জীয়েক জাতি। Tik baladha olai mati, mak bhale jiyik jati. That bullock is good which jumps up when its buttock is touched, that piece of land is good which is in front of a man's hous; and if a mother is good the daught r is the same. টিক্ means buttock, টিক্ বলধা (tik baladha) a bullock that jumps up or runs when its buttock is touched. ওলায় মাটি, land in front of the house, a.e, the land which receives the drainage of the house which, acting as manure, renders it more fertile than other land.
